We found ourselves in Mermaid beach today. This used to be OUR beach and we be living close to this area again in December. A good sign that summer is coming is that a few frangipani trees are starting to flower. The bird in the palm is a blue-faced honey-eater.
Views of and from the luxury beach house for which we bought a raffle ticket. Roast lunch at Tugun Tavern before a beach walk on the slow way home. Last full day for the rental car: we are going to try living on the hill with only foot transportation for a while. We decided to try to find wild koalas in the area to the west of all our lovely beaches. We drove some little roads that were new to us, and then saw some places that we know we have seen on previous trips, like the floating house on the lily-pad pond. We even found a koala in the same tree where we saw one 2 summers ago! Mission accomplished, so we navigated to the Currumbin Creek Rock Pools, and on to Tomewin Road and Freeman's fruit & vegetable stand. On the way back to the coast we saw some kangaroos lounging in a suburban subdivision. They reminded me of all the urban deer back in our Victoria, BC other-home.
The spanner crab picture is from Scales Seafood, a too popular fish and chip place. It was too crowded at lunch time for our liking, so I can't comment on the food. After lunch beach time was soothing, but too windy to stay long. We were having such a good wildlife day that I decided to push our luck and look for dolphins in the Tweed River. Bam. We found some. But wait, the eco-tour is not over, yet. The crested pigeons are common around here, but the birds in the last 3 pictures were new to me. I got help from a Facebook bird group to identify them as a pair of fig birds. Visited some of our favorite places a short drive out of the Gold Coast again today. Cabarita Beach and Hhastings point are always nice. Stopped at not our usual beach access at Wooyung Reserve. The walk over the dunes to the beach had some nice examples of Banksia tree flowers and seed cones. Managed to find some PERFECT shells on the beach today - unexpected bonus for here. Continued to the south end of the coastal reserve, and inland to Mooball with the BIG motorcycle outside the servo/museum/general store. The pub's kitchen was closed, so, after a stop at a fruit & veg stand, we went to Billinudgel for lunch, and got to try Humble Pies pies.
Lorikeets, both rainbow and scaly-breasted, feeding on Eucalyptus tree flower and showing off wing feather colors in and around our water dish. A pair of gallahs came by to check out a tree hollow. And, one of the resident brush turkeys strutted across our driveway. Thank goodness they do nor drink and play in the bird-bath!!!
Late(ish) breakfast at the Gold Coast eatery with the BEST view- Currumbin Vikings SLSC, and then a lunch food court snack at Harbour Town before going to Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Reserve for a wee walk. Saw several groups of Eastern Grey Kangaroos.
A flower called cats whiskers. Selfie gizmo practice on Barry' patio. Stormwatch sunset from Barry's side of the hill.
Bleary eyed, but manages to capture images & sounds of kookaburras on a branch right beside our bedroom.
Then there was an OOPS and I lost about 20GB of photos on an SD memory card. No number of data recovery software programs would retrieve any pictures. Fortunately, I copy files to an external drive almost daily, so the impact is minimal. We thought it would be a good time to drive to Grafton - just before this weekend' Jacaranda Festival. On the way we stopped at Melba's Verandah in Broadwater for coffee and scones. Yum! Then on to our usual stop at the Grafton Info/Maccas lily pond. Timing was good for lunch, so we tried the pub food at The Village Green Hotel. We ate well & had patio views of Jacaranda lined streets.
On the route homeward, we stopped in Ulmarra for Jan to look at antiques and for me to photograph rusty things. North from there, Jan saw a big black & white bird in a pond. I managed to get turned around, went back, & was well rewarded. There were a pair of Jabiru (black necked storks. They were my highlight, but I also saw an egret landing, ducks & cockatoos, and more rust ! Further north there is a house with MANY bird sculpture in & around the yard. |
