Somewhat reluctantly, we backed up on our last morning in the Bay Of Islands, and headed towards home i Auckland. A planned stop along the way was Whangarei, and the clock museum & info centre. Turned out to be a very nice river/ marina tourist zone.

Ahipara is the community closest to the southern end of 90 Mile Beach. All the pictures are of the beach, not the town. We just wanted a taste, as exploring north of here would be a longer tour than we budgeted for. We had time for a couple of walks on a couple of beaches before we drove off for lunch at Mangonui - at the famous/fabulous Fish Shop. A walk around town before hitting the road for home-for-the-night back in Paihia.
Had one chance to pull over safely to take a couple of pics of rugged land-forms. Back in Paihia at the lovely Anchorage Motel for the night. Waddled to the commercial center to find supper. Found ice cream. Oh, well!
Kaitaia was just supposed to be a pit-stop on the way to see 90 -Mile Beach, but this multi-function facility is so fantastic it deserves a post for itself. It houses the area’s library, museum, i-SITE visitor information centre and council customer services, theater & cafe, etc. Yup, it has it all, and I was fascinated with the main atrium art.
Go to the Bay of Islands, THEY said, you'll love it. We went - and we do! We drove north on Sunday, against the weekend traffic flow back into Auckland. Stopped at the info centre in Whangarei. Nice area, but short of our target, so we boogied on up the road. Got to Paihia, drove to the first place to turn around, parked on the street beside the beach, & got out for a bit of a walk & a look-see. Crossed the street to a nice looking motel and took a room for two nights. Nice resort town. Lots of pics from walks up & down the beach street.
