Quick visit to CWS after the Morning Tea (quarterly volunteer meeting)
Beach walk at Kirra was shortened as we watched storm clouds move in from inland.

The day started with a light shower. I tried to capture the diffuse sunlight on the gum tree leaves. The it was all about the birds.
Scaly breasted lorikeets feeding on gum flowers. Sulfur crested cockatoos at our water dish. A pair of king parrots feeding on some kind of bottle brush tree. A spoonbill in Flatrck Creek. I went for a neighborhood walk today - up to Farrell's Outlook. From the round-about near our aerie, I noticed that the little gate up to the water reservoir and communications tower was open once. Not that the little barricade would have ever stopped me walking up before, but I took it as an invitation to explore. My pictures never seem to capture the essence of just how steep these hills are, but some of them can cause vertigo! At the very top of our local hill is a community park! The gate is usually closed to vehicle access from this side, and the is only a narrow dead end street to park close to the other side, so I don't see anybody having an easy time getting to enjoy the facilities.
Saw some soaring pelicans, a couple of magpies, an abandoned flaming plastic sword, and some good views of Currumbin Creek, and evev got a peek of Coolangatta/Tweed Heads through the trees. Most of a moorhen family. Brush turkey chick. Beautiful bougainvilleas A rather large orb-weaving spider. A noisy minor escorts a little whip snake out of its area.. Ok, I know what the spider is (a huntsman) as it eluded my attempts to persuade it to get off of me. Thankfully, I was not alone and a mate got it safely off of me and into the shruberies.
I have no idea what the green thing is (or might become). I chilled out by doing a little extra raking in the koala enclosures. ;P I love the view of Elephant rock with the high-rises of Surfers Paradise in the background. The view from Currumbin Vikings SLSC cafe deck ain't too shabby either. The sailboat is a craft idea I hope to remember back in Canada (drftwood, shells, and maybe Arbutus bark sails?)
We rode the G north to the end of the line at the hospital precinct in Southport, which is the main business center for Gold Coast City. It is busy and contrasts sharply with the relaxed look and feel of the southern GC, as pictured here at Tugun.
I had a craving for laksa for lunch, so we bussed from Currumbin to Broadbeach. One of the shops in the food court makes a soup that keeps me coming back as a repeat customer.
See pics for comments. At 11:11 on 11/11 we were just pulling into the bus stop at Burleigh Heads. Just in time for Remembrance Day ceremonies featuring Australian. New Zealand, and American vets.
And then it was on to beach walks, Fish Taco Tuesday, and more beach walks. |
