Jan wanted fry-bread & I wanted a full Kiwi breakfast, so we went to Carrara. The views of the big waves far out from shore are shot from a cozy balcony on Lansell Ave.

A cyclone a long, long way from here has caused high surf and dangerous waves. The beaches all along this coast are "CLOSED". That is not as bad as it sounds. It means that the patrolled areas are not open to swimming between the red & yellow flags that surf life savers service. Experienced surfers love the big waves, and beach walkers like us are not inconvenienced. That said, there were some foolish people that got smashed into the rocks at snapper!
We had a glorious lunch at Palm Beach SLSC (again!), and then Cleo took us to Bilinga beach to look at the surf. How DO we maintain this pace? Views from the balcony on the other side of Currumbin Crest, and views from the deck of the Palm Beach SLSC for Friday lunch. Sigh!
Definitely not a Valentines Day tradition, but we went op-shoping in the morning. Sunset walk beside the beach was more traditional, but every loverly couple we saw were surrounded by seagulls. :)
Hot, humid, Sunday morning. Regular beach carnival activities at Bilinga and at Kirra, but we found a quiet spot in between. I even got wet all over in salt water!
The first 2 pics are a pair of scaly-breasted lorikeets outside the bedroom balcony. The rest of them are from an afternoon beach walk at Bilinga. Lots of blue things - marine stingers & glaucus nudibranchs . We were doing a lot of storm watching to time our return to the car. Some nice storm clouds & partial rainbows. And, as we left, a rainbow lorikeet at the top of a tree.
Some different things on one of our usual routes. For one, this being the off-season after summer school holidays, it is possible again to take a casual drive & be able to park when we want to take a closer look at something.
As we crossed the bridge at Hastings Point we noticed some pelicans & cormorants, so we pulled over & went for a walk. We even found parking in the shade at Brunswick Heads Beach! We saw some young brush turkeys on the path to the beach AND on the stone breakwater I spotted a little striped snake. Turned out to be a juvenile eastern brown snake - one of the most venomous in the land of things that could be toxic to a person. On to Shelly Beach at Ballina and an extremely low tide. Good shelling! The life savers were trialing drones to be used in surf life-saving. The idea is to drop a floatation device to someone in need faster than someone from shore could get to them. The Bruce highway road-works are making it a bit trickier for our favorite pineapple growers to get people into their fruit stall, but we managed a stop. It was raining so hard on our way north a few days ago that I did not even see it! We went to the coast at Caloundra & had a small walk at Shelly Beach. Then we looked for the wreck of the Dicky on Dicky Beach, not knowing that it had become a hazard and has not been there since 2015!
We stopped for lunch and to shop at Costco our first Australian Costco visit. Hot dog & a soda for $2 and $1.50 foe a huge ice-cream waffle cone! Costco has Swiffer supplies, so Jan is happy! |
