I only had time to snap a few koala pics before shift started. After that I was too busy to take pictures!
LOTS of lorikeets at the morning feed, after late rains yesterday. Train guard duty & kangaroo paddock mingling kept me constantly alert. Park was very busy - especially with the opening of the new Lost Valley precinct. I will check it out on my own time in the next week or two. The hotter it is, the more laid back the koalas are. They do not sweat! They maintain their body temperature by limiting metabolic activity, seeking shade, and hugging trees (that are cooler than the air around them). They look to me like limp rag-dolls.
Keeper Lauren displays a black headed python. Cuious quokka checks me out. Land of Parrots, today featuring King Parrot, gan-gangs, & eastern rosella. Sneak peek at a capybara, soon to be featured in the upcoming Lost Valley precinct. And, me with a franjipani branch I picked off the footpath under the row of gorgeous blooms on the corner of the Sanctuary - will propagate nicely! In the Sanctuary as a visitor this morning. Limp koalas hanging from the branches portray the heat level perfectly. Managed to be around for the crock talk & feed for the first time in ages. One of a group of koala boys was very active early this morning, climbing, jumping, walking on the ground. See the bushy tail of the brush-tailed rock wallaby. Little birds & big birds in the kangaroo paddock. Our group of park volunteers partied after shift at Currumbin Vikings SLSC for lunch. The videos: morning starts early when there is a kookaburra family in the neighborhood. Emus will eat out of ones hand, but they are not nearly as gentle as kangaroos. Active koala. Morning Park volunteers have had a scheduling change that results in a half hour for some of us to do a bit of roving at the beginning of shift. I find it useful to explore areas that I do not often have the chance to be while working. One of those places has turtles!
There are so many pigeons & other birds in the roo paddocks now that the kangaroo food is covered. Poor roos can't even see their brekkie! Part of my shift today was in Land of Parrots - only time I seen to find time to get there. One of the Koala Photos keepers showed me a gum leaf that was about the size of her head! |
