I had a good reason (?) to walk down the hill & go to the Sanctuary this morning. A friend asked me to buy a koala lanyard and and deliver it to her in Canada in June or July. Actually, I did not need much of an excuse to do one more fond-farewell walk through the park. Massive activity in the koala nursery and at the red kangaroo food trough. Crocs were chiilin'. Mr. Cockatiel was watching. Oh, look, more koalas. How did that happen? LOL!

Yup, this long Australia stay is coming to a quick close. Today was my last shift in Koala Photos. Love these guys - and the team of volunteers & keepers! Sigh. See all you-all next time! My last Park Vol shift for this Australia trip was only a couple of hours, but I made the most of it. My first duty was Ticketing/Meet'n'Greet/RovingParkAmbassador, so, after mingling at the lorikeet feeding & entrance/Koala Photo are I went on a quick walk-about. Cute quokka smiles. Koala nursery. Scottish lasses & our keeps on a Dingo Experience! Gang-gang cockatoo pair in Land of Parrots. Kookaburras, orb-weaver spiders, and Banksia in the Wallaby Encounters enclosure. Native waterfowl & emus in the kangaroo paddock. I finished my duties in the grey kangaroos. I stayed there until I saw the Air Asia jet on final approach to Coolangatta airport, and then I left to pick up friends that were on that flight. They were returning from their Viet Nam/Cambodia trip, and I had to give them their car back so they could drive home to Nambucca heads! Soooo, that's it for the yellow shirt until about October (I reckon!). One more wildlife shift in Koala Photos to come on Thursday. The Canadians have arrived. I met friends Cathy, Joyce, and Gloria at the Sanctuary this morning to show them some of my favorite things. I reckon they understand, now, why I call the Lorikeet Arena my Happy Place.
A highlight for every visitor is getting a picture while holding a koala. Thanks again to the crew at Koala Photos! Onward, through the Forest Fringe Aviary - lots of birds, but today I pictured a turtle on a log ('cause that's the way I roll). To the paddocks! Red kangaroos. Eastern Grey kangaroos. The wallaby encounters - Bushy-tailed rock wallabies, swampies, red-necks, (sorry, no sightings of pademelons today). The emu looked fine! Pelican, water birds & giant eel feeding show, then back through the roos to Lost Valley. Red panda, iguana, capybara, ring-tailed lemur, chameleon, golden pheasant, curlew, little parrots, & Mandarin duck. EEKS, it's almost show time! A quick walk past the crocs, and then through the Land of Parrots, and made it to the Big Fang Theory Show on time! The it was just a short walk to the next stage for my favorite - The Free Flight Bird Show. Always totally enjoyable. And that was IT. Everyone was exhausted & ready for lunch. Great morning! Every Thursday is a special day for me, in with the crews of people and animals in Koala Photos, but today was extraordinary as keeper Kylie presented koala information to CWS staff, volunteers, and TAFE students.
I spent a lot of time with Rogue today, doing a thorough cleaning of his enclosure. Gail managed to get a couple of shots of Khaleesi and young Sid, both trying to grab my hat as I used a garden hose to fill a pot to holds gum branches for them. |
